About five years ago, Midoriya was framed as a traitor of UA. Everyone believed it except for a select few. He was thrown in jail for two months and later found innocent, but the damage was done. He decided to leave UA, and Eri went with him because she hated them for what they did to him. No one has heard anything about them since.

It’s not like he actually has feelings for Deku. He’s just making sure no one can hurt the little fucker. He still maintained that sweet, innocent naivety from high school, despite everything that had happened to him. Katsuki had seen people try to take advantage of that and he’d been the one to comfort the damned nerd when his heart got broken again and again. So why not just cut the issue off at the root–leave no space in their lives for someone to fuck with Deku again. No one has gotten close to the nerd since Katsuki took it up to be his personal hero. Good, because Izuku doesn’t need anyone except for Katsuki. Katsuki and Izuku go on an away mission together and it tests Katsuki and his "not feelings" for the nerd.

Katsuki is the first one to get his soul mark from their class, which should bring a smug grin to his face, but all it does is gnaw at his insides even more. He already knows his classmates are gonna go around telling everyone whose name they have on them as soon as they get ‘em, and while he would have been willing to tell someone like Eijirou or even Izuku if he pressed enough and his soulmate’s name wasn’t someone they already knew, he’s not so sure about it now. Not when 'Shouto Todoroki' practically bores holes into his face the more he stares at the name. -or, soulmates Katsuki and Shouto falling in love without knowing they're each other's soulmate

Katsuki Bakugou's obsession with Icyhot starts - like all the fucking horrible heel realisations in his life do - with the shitty nerd. And Izuku - Izuku is just trying to work things out as they go along. (Companion piece to "In Media Res".)
