A dimly lit tunnel with a light in the middle
I've got something special just for you today.
The path narrows into a cramped, claustrophobic tunnel of rough stone. Loose rocks crunch under our feet. Looking back, the way ahead disappears into pitch darkness, our lantern light unable to penetrate far. Gradually the tunnel opens up into wider chambers. Glints of quartz, pyrite and ore veins sparkle from the rock walls in our lantern glow. The air feels dense, untouched by surface winds. As we climb higher, evidence of the miners' presence emerges. Rotting wooden braces line the shafts, and old rusted carts sit abandoned on the tracks. Gasps of fresher air reach us. Soon we're in the actively worked part of the mine again. Miners push carts of stone and shout echos to one another. Lamplight flickers through multiple tunnels intersecting here. Their elbow grease has carved order from chaotic stone. After a final uneven slope, we glimpse daylight ahead! Stepping out of the mine mouth, the sudden sunlight and open sky make us blink. Fresh mountain air fills our lungs. A bird's cry rings out - how foreign after the subterranean silence!
